Often said only outsold by the Bible and Shakespeare, Agatha Christie was indeed the grande dame of mystery writers.
With 80 novels and short story collections, a dozen plays, and several non-fiction books to her credit and an estimated 2 billion copies of her works sold, she has "entertained more people for more hours at a time than any other writer." (Margery Allingham, New York Times Book Review, 1950)
Both her main detectives, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, have been widely dramatized, both in feature films and TV movies and series. Using their deductive reasoning skills and the ability to critically observe peoples conduct, a la Sherlock Holmes, these two detectives solved crimes in such works as "Death on the Nile", Murder on the Orient Express", "Murder She Said" and "Murder at the Vicarage"
Her writing career which spanned more than half a century culminated in her being named a Dame of the British Empire in 1971. At the time of her death in January 1976, she was the best-selling English novelist of all time.
